"Chase Walker used to be a good kid—charming, athletic, and with a bright future ahead, but that was before travesty struck his life, sinking him into deep despair. Caught up in a world of drugs and alcohol, he doesn’t notice time slipping away until he’s arrested for underage drinking one night.
Fed up with watching her son destroy his life, Chase’s mom relocates him to live in a small ranching community with his ex-military grandfather. Chase is far from happy about the situation until he meets, Nikki, the cute cheerleader who won’t give football players like him the time of day.
Chase enjoys a good challenge though and sets out to claim Nikki for his own. He soon discovers she’s more than a pretty face—she’s a balm to his troubled spirit also. But when tragedy strikes Nikki’s life too, suddenly Chase finds himself put to the ultimate test. Can he trust Nikki, and all that she’s taught him? Will it be enough?"
MY REVIEW:
Damn.
This is a hard book to review.
Here goes nothing.
Chase. <3 Chase isone of the most realistic characters I've ever read. How do I explain what makes him so amazing? Some characters are written with the sole purpose to make girls swoon. Every move they make and every word from their lips is crafted specifically to make girls fall head over heels for them. I know this is the worst example ever, but think Edward from Twilight. He was created to make girls go crazy; he's 100% fictional hero. I know your probably thinking, "No shit! He's a freaking vampire", but just try to stay with me here. Chase wasn't written to make girls fall head over heels in love with him. Chase was just Chase. He's your next door neighbor, your brother's best friend, or one of your good friends from high school. You've met someone like him before. He's just a guy. He's just a guy who is trying to cope. He's just a guy whose trying to live. I'm not saying he isn't special because he definitely is. I'm saying that he didn't use his supernatural powers to stop a van from crushing the girl he loved; he just loved her. He wasn't written to make girls swoon, but that made him all the more swoonworthy. He wasn't written to be a hero, but that made him a bigger hero in my book. The author never once tried to hide his flaws. Better yet, she flaunted them, and that is why I love Chase. I love Chase because I saw all of him, scars and all, and I absolutely adored, admired, and respected what I saw. He is just a boy who lived life and loved a girl with all his heart.
I'm a happily ever after kind of girl. That being said, I'm glad that I only briefly skimmed a couple of reviews before I began this novel because honestly, I wouldn't have read this novel if I would have paid closer attention to the reviews, and that would have been a shame. I saw the "get out the tissues" comments, but I wasn't expecting that! WOW! That broke my heart into a million tiny pieces. That made me ball my eyes out. That made me question whether I was going to love or hate this novel. But honestly, in the end, that created a realistic, lovely, heart-wrenching, bittersweet, powerful love story. Let me reiterate, I am a huge fan of happy endings. I didn't get my happy ending, but I still really enjoyed this story. This novel doesn't have a bad ending, it just doesn't have my ideal-hearts and rainbows-sunshine and flowers type of ending.
I gave Chasing Nikki by Lacey Weatherford 4 STARS. I really enjoyed Chasing Nikki. It was a remarkable contemporary romance novel, and I strongly recommend this novel to young adults who appreciate an emotional, realistic ending. Personally, I have a hard time appreciating emotional, realistic endings, but in my opinion, Ms. Weatherford made this one work.

I posted last night in the comment section of another book when I saw you were reading this book. I could not decide if I wanted to read Chasing Nikki because I read it didn't end as a "happy ever after". I still can't decide!! I think I am going to trust you and read it! I am in the middle of another book called "Almost". When I finish it, I am going to download it to my Kindle. While I download it I am going to keep my fingers crossed for a sequel that will give me my happy ever after. Is that a possibility? I know....I am hopeless!
Agh. This is hard. Even if there is a sequel, you won't get the happily ever after you wanted from this book! I'm trying really hard not to spoil anything, but I don't want to mislead you. Only buy/read this book if your looking for an emotional ending. Does that help?
It is me again! I spend a lot of time on your blog. I am slowly reading every review :) When the kids go to bed tonight I am grabbing a glass of wine and a box of tissues and reading Chasing Nikki. At first I was hoping maybe they just followed their dreams and went to different colleges (my hope for a sequel), but now a part of me is thinking maybe a death. I was able to enjoy the movie Titanic and it didn't have a happy ending.
Regardless of the outcome of the book or how much I do/don't like it...I will still love you and your blog. I have to work tomorrow and the kids are having a sleep over tomorrow night, I hope I am able to put Chasing Nikki down!!!
I stayed up way to late, but I finished it. You were right it is a great book. I am glad I read it. This may sound crazy, but I would have liked it better without the epilouge.
Hey!! I am soooo glad that you enjoyed this novel. I was really nervous. LOL. And, I completely understand what you mean about the epilogue. I LOVED the last line, but I could have done without the rest. It was just hard to emotionally jump from where things were to four years later. I think there is going to be another book. I couldn't find a synopsis, but I found a book on goodreads.com by Lacey Weatherford titled Finding Chase expected out December 2012. I am assuming it is about this Chase :)
Thanks so much for all of your sweet words. I am so glad that you like my blog!!!
-XOXO
